    The 73
    rd
New York was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Major Michael Burns while Colonel William R. Brewster commanded the brigade.  With its core formed by New York City firefighters, the 73

New York was also known as the 2
    nd
    Fire Zouaves (and the 4
    th
Excelsior for its position in the Excelsior Brigade).  In fierce fighting on July 2, 1863, Barksdale’s Mississippians drove the 73
    rd
New York back, the rebels “firing and shrieking like Indians.”
The monument is located on Sickles Avenue, in Gettysburg, PA, and was dedicated in 1897.
